Ryan Penny June 6, 1980 – November 1, 2003 Music Scholarship
Fundraiser
Last Years
Fundraiser The 7th
Annual Ryan Penny Memorial Music Scholarship Fundraiser was held in Edmonton
at the Trap and Gill on Saturday, November 15, 2009, and was another great
success, raising $5,657.34. The quilt
winner is unknown, but someone did win it! Click HERE for photos. As well,
the 1st Newfoundland fundraiser was held at Junctions on George
Street, St. John’s and approximately $2,000.00 was raised there. Quilt winner was Lynda Babstock. Both
venues have been awesome in raising money for the scholarship fund. Because of the success of the fundraisers
to date, the Committee for the Fund decided to donate $3,000.00 to Donald C.
Jamieson Academy for the purchase of an electronic piano. We would
like to thank everyone for every “penny” they have so freely given to the
Fund and in Ryan’s memory. He must
be whistling! Background Information The Ryan Penny Memorial Music Scholarship Fund was started
by Ryan’s friends in Edmonton, AB in November 2003, in memory of Ryan who was
tragically killed in an industrial accident near Fort St. John, BC on
November 1, 2003. Ryan moved to
Edmonton in February 2000 and worked as a motorman with Precision Drilling
out of Edmonton, AB. Ryan liked to whistle, sing and play guitar and his
friends were all aware of his musical talents. It wasn’t hard for his friends to determine where to direct the
scholarship fund…he entertained his friends whenever the occasion arose. Therefore, this
scholarship fund is for musically inclined school students and will be on a
yearly basis to those who qualify, on advice of the music teachers. Ryan had a thirst for life and enjoyed every moment that
he lived. His friendly and happy
nature made him lots of friends along the way. As one put it “Ryan had a knack for making friends from all
walks of life from coast to coast.” Ryan’s friends, Rose Charnell, a friend from Edmonton, and
Jimmy Whiffen, a singer in Edmonton (originally from the Placentia area)
wrote a song about him called “The Whistler.” As one of the lines in the song said “He’s whistling with the
angels having a pint from a silver cup.” Ryan was loved by all who knew him and is missed dearly by his family and friends.
Four
Marystown-Burin area students will be selected each year for the “Ryan Penny
Memorial Music Scholarship Awards.”
